Hi Everyone :boogie:

As well as this week's fabulous submissions, here are some sketching advice from the lovely and very talented ~RoseThorn33. Enjoy! :)

Sketching with :iconrosethorn33:

When Sketching portraits in graphite or charcoal, it is easiest to limit the amount of detail you spend on the sketch and instead layout the places where the darkest shades will be and then where the lighting is placed.

The face is always a good place to start because it is important to make your drawing look like the person in the reference photo. Even if there is no reference, the face requires concentration and attention to detail so drawing the more difficult part first is good practice and will determine whether you want to continue with the drawing or start again.

You can buy blending tools at art supply stores but I prefer to use cotton balls and cotton swabs to blend. Graphite (pencils) are lighter than charcoal and cannot make the same intense black colors, but they are also easier to erase and control when blending. Consider both mediums when starting and look at the reference photo.

If the reference has very dark shadows, the charcoal may work better. Although choosing to work in charcoal from a photo that has bright lighting may change the entire look of the person; in that case, go with graphite.

Good luck on your next portraits!
